Cool People Making Whale Jokes

Sometimes you find something a friend made and you are so amazed, because you knew they were really cool, but you hadn’t realized they were so cool that they were producing cool things.

Just yesterday I found out that a former RA of mine has the coolest blog ever called The Tragic Whale. She does paper cut outs of whales and their tragic stories. I am going to put one of my favorites here.

Margo the Cargo Whale… A Tragic Whale Story

It was a cheery day at sea when Margo the Whale realized her life was purposeless.

She’d have to come up with something to justify her life. Otherwise, she was afraid, she might wither away.

She tried becoming a bird catcher, but she felt too guilty imprisoning her friends.

The next obvious choice was a hair dresser, but whales have no hair to style and no hands to style with.

Things were getting rough. “Oh!” thought Margo. “I can sell cell phones! Maybe this is my true calling!”

Margo took a break from her search. What could she do with her life that was both satisfying and helpful to others? She frowned, deep in thought.

Then it came to her!

Margo would become… a Cargo Whale!

Trailing behind small ocean liners, Margo the cargo Whale could fill her life with meaning and purpose.

But the cargo began to block her breathe hole. And it became quite heavy.

Margo’s cargo crushed and suffocated her.

Also she made a shark coin purse, which is up there in coolest things ever.

Also, also she has a series called “fashion advice from mom“, which is funny, funny, funny.

t was a cheery day at sea when Margo the Whale realized her life was purposeless.

Also, she made a coin purse that looks like a shark!

I’m a zebra!

Not really, but I wish I was. Or I at least had this dress.

Weekend of Bagpipers

This weekend, I will be watching the parade that goes in front of my house every year. Hello bagpipers!

Tiny giraffe’s that are adorable, but not real and actually an ad campaign.

If hipsters could eat cookies, they would eat these cookies.

Really cool video.

More and more balloons. But these ones are of the hot air persuasion.

Peeing while in a romper, the step-by-step  instructions everyone needs.

Great house, with great colors, and everything in it is great.

I like birds and I like mobiles. Meet the birdmobile.

Floral lettering because regular fonts are stupid.

Meeting of the minds: Michael Cera and the Jersey Shore cast.

Hope your weekend is full of bagpipers and other fun things.

My, My Mavis

As a kid I would attempt to play computer games, but I found them very stressful. My brother was always playing action games: Doom, Diablo, and other games that I can’t remember the names of. I loved watching, but whenever  I would attempt to play I would freeze up. It was too much pressure.

So instead I stole my mom’s “game” Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing. It was awesome. The concept was simple: press buttons and get praise. And there was no pressure. If I did poorly, Mavis broke it to me nicely. She is sweet like that.

So now I am all grown up and I want to show Mavis Beacon how fast I can type with accuracy. So, I am downloading a free trial. Do you also want to make Mavis proud? Download Mavis Beacon for mac or for PC.

Here is the original picture that made me crave the support and attention of Mavis. It’s by Adam Lisagor, check it out here.

5 Books about Women Who Are Cooler Than You

While at a flea market last week, I saw the books being sorted into the category “More Interesting Women”. In my mind I automatically made the label say “more interesting women than YOU”. So what female characters do I find more interesting than myself. Well, lets begin…

5. When Everything Changed

This collection of real women’s stories written and collected by Gail Collins is the perfect example of a book full of interesting women. The first story features a woman wearing pants in a courtroom. Can you get more bad ass?

4. I Capture the Castle

This novel by Dodie Smith tells the story of a young girl, Cassandra, as she develops her writing skills in a diary she keeps. Like any young girl she complains of her boring life, but she lives in a castle, making her life way cooler than mine.

3. The Color Purple

Lesbians in the 1930s. Woah! That’s interesting.

2. Zelda

In this biography Nancy Milford tells the life of Zelda Fitzgerald. She was the inspiration for almost every female character F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote, so it makes sense that she is super interesting. And reading about Zelda’s transformation from Southern beauty to sad schizophrenic is both unfortunate and engrossing. I have not finished this book yet, but with 75% done I know she is cooler than me.

1. The Women’s Room

I think this book has to be my number one because every woman explored in this book had a story that explains so much about women and their evolution over time. It was remarkable how Marilyn French would delve into minor characters so deeply, telling full back stories that are impossible to forget. Even the most minor character are more interesting than myself.

Well those are the books I could come up with. Have any more to add? Tell me what they are.

Kodak’s Coloramas

Worked on an advertisement for Kodak today in my design class. And found some really interesting history on the company.

There were these large photo prints called Coloramas which Kodak made. They were gigantic (18×60 feet) transparencies that were backlit by natural light in Grand Central Station, and other locations.

Take a look at the Kodak site to see more. (go to the gallery and sort by subject). In total there were 565 coloramas displayed publicly from 1950 to 1990. Some of these are currently in the archive at the George Eastman House. Find more information about the series here.

Also here is a very sad article about the last Kodachrome processing machine.
