Lots of book posts today. I finished Tortilla Flat by John Steinbeck a couple of days ago.
I started out feeling a little angry at this book. I was sick of Steinbeck’s male characters who manage to do everything wrong. They continuously find themselves doing bad things and are surprised as it backfires. But as the story evolved so did their characters.
If the book wasn’t good enough on its own, this quote sure helped, “it is worth it to be kind and generous… one feels a golden warmth glowing like a hot enchilada in one’s stomach.” A good food analogy is necessary to explain the Golden Rule.
Hilarious memoir by Mishna Wolff about growing up in a black neighborhood, while being oh so white. Although that is how it’s pitched I see it more as a memoir about a father daughter relationship. Very, very funny, but in that dark way. Read it. If you wont do that at least read about her and look at her website.
Worked on an advertisement for Kodak today in my design class. And found some really interesting history on the company.
There were these large photo prints called Coloramas which Kodak made. They were gigantic (18×60 feet) transparencies that were backlit by natural light in Grand Central Station, and other locations.
Take a look at the Kodak site to see more. (go to the gallery and sort by subject). In total there were 565 coloramas displayed publicly from 1950 to 1990. Some of these are currently in the archive at the George Eastman House. Find more information about the series here.
Okay so life is full of lists, and most of them are boring and full of shit you don’t want to do, but this one is going to be great because it’s about Louis CK. So get ready.
9. His jokes are like little, beautiful, thoughtful presents, but instead of being wrapped in tissue paper they have been placed in a sweaty sock. So at first you hate the person for giving it to you, but when you look inside you are touched.
8. He does every step of the creating process: writing, producing, directing, editing.
Once again I find myself blog stalking. This time it is the fashion/do-it yourself blog, Runway DIY. Arianna is amazing because she makes complete tutorials of how to make fashionable clothing and accessories by using clothes, hardware, and random things you don’t know what to do with. If that is not an amazing feat in itself she is also a consistent blogger, posting one to three tutorials every week. Seriously impressive.
My new plan is to get better at sewing, and make this dress.
If that doesn’t work out there are a ton of other pieces she made that are cool:
This post made me think I would like embroidery. It looks like it would be similar to a puzzle: tedious, mind-numbing, and a cause of scoliosis. I love puzzles.
