5 Books about Women Who Are Cooler Than You

While at a flea market last week, I saw the books being sorted into the category “More Interesting Women”. In my mind I automatically made the label say “more interesting women than YOU”. So what female characters do I find more interesting than myself. Well, lets begin…

5. When Everything Changed

This collection of real women’s stories written and collected by Gail Collins is the perfect example of a book full of interesting women. The first story features a woman wearing pants in a courtroom. Can you get more bad ass?

4. I Capture the Castle

This novel by Dodie Smith tells the story of a young girl, Cassandra, as she develops her writing skills in a diary she keeps. Like any young girl she complains of her boring life, but she lives in a castle, making her life way cooler than mine.

3. The Color Purple

Lesbians in the 1930s. Woah! That’s interesting.

2. Zelda

In this biography Nancy Milford tells the life of Zelda Fitzgerald. She was the inspiration for almost every female character F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote, so it makes sense that she is super interesting. And reading about Zelda’s transformation from Southern beauty to sad schizophrenic is both unfortunate and engrossing. I have not finished this book yet, but with 75% done I know she is cooler than me.

1. The Women’s Room

I think this book has to be my number one because every woman explored in this book had a story that explains so much about women and their evolution over time. It was remarkable how Marilyn French would delve into minor characters so deeply, telling full back stories that are impossible to forget. Even the most minor character are more interesting than myself.

Well those are the books I could come up with. Have any more to add? Tell me what they are.

Haikus from my Childhood

Looking through the cavern that is my computer and have found some  “literary work” from my childhood. Here are some of my haiku attempts :

Tables are useful
They have exactly four legs
I wish they didn’t

Oreos are good
Especially dipped in milk
I love Oreos

Dinosaurs kick butt
They would beat lions a lot
Even in the snow

Valid arguments by me as a preteen.

Hot for your weekend

Well this weather sure is something hot. Like an oven, or fire. The heat makes it hard for me to respond to anything without screaming “What!” or a long string of swears.

Here’s a list of links for silly things in an attempt to distract you from the heat:

An interview of Ryan Gosling, that made me think I was still in the 90s when David Letterman was cool.

Coffins.. but they’re nice.

Lego ice cubes: build something really amazing, then watch it melt before you are done!

I try and be as late on trends as possible, so here is something rather tardy. This woman wore the same dress for a year, but made it stylish. Here is a video of all her outfits.

Great Balloons!

Arrange things by color, you’ll be so much cooler.

I want this tie.

Things that are cute and summery.

Tats for City Rats

I would get this temporary tattoo, but I am not confident that I truly love NYC more then Milton. He seemed pretty into the city in the documentary To Inform and Delight.

New York Times Butt of Joke

The New York Times got a little PG-13 this Sunday, with an interesting choice of words on their front page story. “Tabloid Taint Rubs Off On a Cozy Scotland Yard”. When I looked at it online it seems as though they caught their joke at the tail end, the new headline reads “Stain From Tabloids Rubs Off on a Cozy Scotland Yard“. It just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

Designing ads

So what have I been doing the last week, while avoiding blogging? Well I was designing ads for my Print Copywriting class. Take a look at them:

This one was for Kodak, decided to bring it back in time with the Kodak Coloramas.

These two were for Voskos Greek Yogurt, which is a brand I had never heard of before.

So naturally expletives were needed.

This last one was attempting to spread information about obesity, as well as creating support.

Well there they are.

Quotes by Zelda Fitzgerald

“Why should all life be work, when we all can borrow. Let’s only think of today, and not worry about tomorrow.”

I’m Down, with “I’m Down”

Hilarious memoir by Mishna Wolff about growing up in a black neighborhood, while being oh so white. Although that is how it’s pitched I see it more as a memoir about a father daughter relationship. Very, very funny, but in that dark way. Read it. If you wont do that at least read about her and look at her website.

Kodak’s Coloramas

Worked on an advertisement for Kodak today in my design class. And found some really interesting history on the company.

There were these large photo prints called Coloramas which Kodak made. They were gigantic (18×60 feet) transparencies that were backlit by natural light in Grand Central Station, and other locations.

Take a look at the Kodak site to see more. (go to the gallery and sort by subject). In total there were 565 coloramas displayed publicly from 1950 to 1990. Some of these are currently in the archive at the George Eastman House. Find more information about the series here.

Also here is a very sad article about the last Kodachrome processing machine.
